WordPress
Quite simply, WordPress is a type of CMS (Content Management System), WordPress websites are perfect for small to medium sized sites. They are based on ‘themes’. Many of the modules we use to add movement and interest to a website are already included. This means we can build sites in a shorter timescale than it takes to handcode a site, and for a more reasonable price. This makes WordPress ideal for many businesses. (This site is built with it).
It’s probably the most powerful and easiest to use CMS around today. Many large companies use it for their sites, such as Mashable and TechCrunch. To see some examples of well-known sites and famous people who use wordpress, take a look at this site (this takes you to an external site and I have no control of the content of such site).
Personally, I love WordPress, it has allowed me to offer my clients websites without me having to learn hard-coding skills. I’m a big believer in sticking to your key skills, and mine are design skills. WordPress allows me to design sites, but also build them because of the very visual nature of the interface.
In fact, most people could build their own sites in WordPress if they set their mind to it. You may think that is a daft thing to say as a business owner who builds websites. But I don’t think it is. I want you to be aware of all your options.
Firstly, although I don’t need to know how to code, WordPress can be tricky. It’s easy to make a simple site, but it’s not so easy to build a larger site, it takes a lot of time to learn how to use the theme you choose to the best of its abilities. You have to know how best to use the different tools and modules, you have to design the site, get the hosting sorted, then build it. My first few sites took me twice the amount of time they do now, and I made a loss on them because I didn’t charge my clients extra for me learning how to build them. But now with many sites under my belt, I’m efficient at building them.
But as a business owner, do YOU have time, building one site, to learn how to use WordPress well enough to make it look as amazing as your business deserves? Probably not in all honesty. Your time would be better spent doing what YOU are great at and making money for your business.
When you decide to come to me to build your site, trust me, you will have your hands full just getting the content and images together to supply to me. Build the site yourself and I reckon you will spend more than 40 hours building your site. 10 of those hours will be gathering and writing your content, the rest will be sorting the hosting, on the phone to tech support, learning how to install WordPress, choosing a theme, getting to grips with it, working out where everything goes, building it, tweaking it and finally finishing it. Then, on top of that you will then need to sort out the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) so it ranks well in search engines.
Or, you just pay us and we take care of the design, build, hosting, support and SEO for you. It will be money well spent.
